- He was the last person executed by hanging in Wise County, having been convicted of killing his blind wife, Nancy Branham, in Wise County on12 December 1902. Following that killing, Branham fled to Kentucky, where he robbed and killed Hense Moore, of Beaver Creek, Floyd County, in March 1903.
