    • The Rockbridge County News of 25 Jan 1912 reported the death of C. J. Bell as follows:

Mr. C. J. Bell Died This Morning Near Raphine
Intelligence was received here to-day of the death at his home near Raphine of Mr. Cornelius Jackson Bell. He died at 7:30 o'clock from pneumonia, added to other infirmities.

Mr. Bell was one of the best known and most popular citizens of Rockbridge and his death will be heard with general regret. He had for some time been in bad health.

Mr. Bell was born near where he died, Oct. 12, 1833, and all of his long life of seventy-eight years were spent in Rockbridge. Mr. Bell was a Confederate veteran. He was a man of fine intelligence. He took much interest in public affairs and in religious work. He was for forty-six years an elder in Mt. Carmel church and for thirty-eight years clerk of the session. In his attendance upon all religious meetings of church and session he was remarkable. In public affairs Mr. Bell will be best remembered as clerk of South River school board. He served upon the board for a generation, and struggled with its work during its early days of adversity, and survived to see his labors crowned with the schools of South River in a most flourishing condition. Mr. Bell took an unfailing interest in the success of the Democratic party.

At his home, an old fashioned hospitality prevailed, and he was never happier than when he saw his friends about him there.

The county News is indebted to Mr. Bell for services of great value, extending from its foundation to his last illness. His loyalty in reporting the news of his neighborhood was remarkable, and by intelligence and wide acquaintance with people and events of his locality he was highly qualified.

Mr. Bell was a son of Nelson Bell of the well known Rockbridge and Augusta family of that name. He was educated at Washington and Lee. He was thrice married. first to Miss Sue Bradley, then to Miss Pitzer of Botetourt, and next to Miss Lizzie W. Hyde, who survives him. He left six sons, Charles B. Bell of Bluefield, Frank Bell of Washington, Bennett N. Bell of near Lexington, by the first marriage, and Hansford H. Bell, Ollie H. Bell and Harry Bell by the third marriage. All were at his bedside when he died.
